CORNELL MOURNS THE DEATH OF COACH WALT SCHLAEPFER '51
Walter W. Schlaepfer '51 passed away in Rancho Mirage, CA on January 17, 2021 at the age of 91. Coach Walt made his mark on Cornell in so many ways. He played what was then 150# football and rowed crew, as well as serving as Commodore. After Cornell he trained as a jet fighter pilot and saw action in the Korean Conflict. From 1957-1960 Walt coached the Cornell Lightweights, returning for one more season in 1962. Coach Walt amassed a 23-5 record over his five years. Walt went into the insurance business in Ithaca, specializing in life insurance, largely with Massachusetts Mutual, and was widely known for his business acumen. Husband to Cindy Warren Schlaepfer '81 (Womens Hockey - Hall of Fame). In later years, Cindy and Walt split their time between Maine and California. Through it all Cindy and Walt have been ardent supporters of Cornell Athletics. The CRA extends our deepest sympathies on Coach Walt's passing and offer condolences to the entire Schlaepfer family.
