Reunion Row - Cornell Loves Classes ending in 2 and 7
Simply stated CORNELL CREW LOVES years that end in 7 and 2! While there was representation from tons of classes, the championships crews that returned were the '57 HWT crew, the '67 LWT crew, the '77 HWT crew, the '82 HWT crew, the '92 LWT crew, and the '07 LWT crew. Adding to the list, on hand was the new LWT National Champions of 17! In terms of further inspiration former varsity coaches Dr Lew Evans, Todd Jesdale, Fin Meislahn, and Tony Johnson all attended. As mentioned in the comments section, we missed a few other championship crews. The '62 HWT crew won the IRAs and the '62 LWT crew won the Eastern Sprints in a famous three way tie. And on the women's side, there were three '97 rowers at the reunion who were part of the 1995 IRA winning women's varsity.
Friday night Todd Kennet worked with David Darwin ’67 and Tom Moore ’67 to present a new addition to the fleet. The CLASS OF ’67 was christened at Bartel’s Hall in the Ramin room in the class dinner in front of the entire class. The boat was absolutely sparkling as it sat as the center piece of the room.
Saturday morning started with a boat christening ceremony for three hulls. The CLASS OF 2012 (WMN), The CLASS OF 67 (from the night before), and The SPIRIT OF 57. Furthermore, an endowment was set up so that SPIRIT OF 57 will live forever in the racks of Collyer boathouse and the CORNELL UNIVERISTY ROWING CENTER! Carl Schwarz was in charge, so "Thank You!" Carl and all those who made these additions to our fleet possible!
The number of people attending the reunion was impressive - families, friends - great fun! Eleven 8's took to the water! The oldest rower was 82 years old! Lots of GENERATIONS of Cornell Crew running around. To make things even better, the CRA Board provided breakfast and lunch.
Following all the rowing, there was another short ceremony in the Traditions room. Different members of the '57 class helped Cornell by obtaining Coach Sanford’s stroke watch and Olympic Bronze medal from Helsinki Finland. These are now on display next to Coach Sanford’s picture in the Tradition Room. Crew members that rowed for him recalled some short stories about what he meant to them, how he cared for them, and how he worked.
Overall, a huge success!
