Robert Post '50

Robert Nicholas Post, age 93, passed away on October 28th, 2021 from heath complications due to a fall. He was surrounded by his children and many grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane, who died in October of 2020.

Bob, also known as “Chief” was born on March 9th, 1928 in New York City to Ethel and Nick Post. He was an only child and due to Ethel’s busy and successful career in the fashion industry he was sent to Kent School in the 2nd Form (8th grade). He flourished at Kent, eventually serving as Senior Prefect. From there, he went to Cornell University where he received a degree in Engineering, was a member of Alpha Delta Phi, and was also the head of the cheerleading squad. He was a member of the 1949 Lightweight Crew Team that won the national championship. These 9 athletes remained lifelong friends and frequently gathered to row together even as recently as 2019.

He participated in ROTC at Cornell and served in the Army after he graduated. He was stationed in Iceland where he shot off howitzers and learned to cook.

When he reentered civilian life, he began a long career in the railroad industry with the American Brake Shoe Company (ABEX). It was at this juncture that he met Jane Carpenter and they began a story book romance that lasted over 66 years.

With their four kids and eventually their kids’ families, Chief and Zaney pursued an active lifestyle that included lots of skiing and sailing. Chief served as the Rear Commodore of the Bay Head Yacht Club and Commodore of the Mantoloking Yacht Club (MYC). Chief had a big impact on sailing at the MYC, teaching adult sailing and helping out with local and national regattas. In recognition of these efforts, the trophy for the adult club sailing championship is named in his honor.

Chief was a devoted Episcopalian, attending both All Saints, Bay Head and St. Simons by the Sea in Mantoloking. He eagerly pitched in whenever it was necessary, from doing the daily reading, to passing the offering plate, to donning the acolyte vestments and lighting candles.

Chief is survived by his four children and their spouses, Joy (Bob) Vaeth, Nick (Susan) Post, Julie (Patrick) Miller, and Tom (Sarah) Post; 9 grandchildren – Jim (Mary Ann) Vaeth, Julie (Zak) Vaeth Brewer, Katie (Drew) Post Wagner, Robbie (Sara) Post, Marshall (Caroline) Miller, Clair (Pat) Miller Boggs, George Post, Sarah Jane Post, and Libby Post; and 7 great-grandchildren.

The family is planning a memorial service at St. Simons sometime in June.
